How Aleppo could become the region's first destination for web technology

Written in 2019. Every tech conference in Beirut raised the same question: why not Aleppo? The city's hard-work mentality kept it alive in its worst years and is what makes it recover faster than others. Neighbouring post-war economies show the dark scenario: currency collapse, inflation, giants moving in, young people unable to compete and wanting to leave. A knowledge economy is not the whole answer but it is a feasible part of it. The essay walks through the five elements of a tech ecosystem, workforce, investors, market, regulation, and city infrastructure, and proposes concrete first steps, starting with skills and specialised tech communities.
